Web Development with SEO Intact

Search Engine Optimization, Website Design No Comments

As SEO & Web Development experts we are constantly challenged to give recommendations on how websites can be better optimized. The bottom line is that the most important things you can do to better optimize a site MUST be done during Web Development and not afterwards. Often our clients will ask us to optimize their websites that were built by Web Designers who did not implement the simple concepts of SEO. As a result, we are the ones who have to tear apart their existing sites and fix them piece by piece. So below we have listed several important guidelines to incorporate into the initial design of your website.

1. Keywords – List out the keywords you want to rank for before you even start building your site.

2. www vs. Non-www-Decide which URL you want to use, then redirect everything else to the preferred version. This will save you a lot of link value because when you’re using both URL’s, it creates an automatic duplicate of your site.

3. Unique URL’s for each Product-Make sure that there is only one unique URL for each product or service that your website offers. This will help eliminate unnecessary duplicate content problems.

4. 404 page-Create a custom 404 page so that if someone lands on a 404 page, at least they will know that they’ve reached the right site. Without a 404 page the visitors will assume the site is down and move on to the next website.

5. Social Media Buttons-Incorporate Social Media Sharing Buttons like “ShareThis” in your website.

6. Analytics Tracking-Make sure you have the Analytics Tracker installed. This way you will be able to tell who your visitors are and where they’re coming from. This tool can give you lots of crucial information that will allow you to better market your site. Read more about the analytics tool at Google Analytics.

7. Web Standards-Follow Web Standards for HTML, CSS & Database Programming so that your website can easily be changed later on by professionals.

8. XML Sitemap-It only takes a few minutes to generate an XML Sitemap but make sure you do it and submit it to the major Search Engines through their webmaster tools.

9. Webmaster Tools-you can find out a lot about how GOOGLE is seeing your site through Google Webmaster Tools. Submit your XML sitemap and be notified of a problem if they find one with your site. Also, check out Bing’s Webmaster Center.

10. Robots.txt File-When you create your rorbots.txt file, make sure that you are disallowing any pages or directions that you don’t want the search engines crawling. Standard examples would be login pages, shopping cart pages, etc.

Search Engine Mistakes That Will Kill Your Rankings

Search Engine Optimization 4 Comments

As a well established Web Development and Search Optimization Company we have often seen mistakes made on websites that cause them to not rank well in the search engines. Following are some of the problems that we often come across.

Usage of Too Much Flash

Flash is a very powerful tool when it comes to transforming a plain website into an eye catching and exciting page. Flash websites can contain videos, images, animations and other features to create an amazing user experience. However, the downside to having a Flash powered website is that the elements mentioned above are not visible to search engines. Content and links in Flash do not exist to search engine crawlers. If your website is built in Flash, we recommend including type of HTML navigation to help the crawlers navigate your website and know what each of the pages is about.

No Content or Duplicate Content

Good quality content is critical to ranking well. Often times we have stressed the importance of having lots of good quality material in your website. Crawlers rely on content to determine what a page should rank for in the search results. Because Google wants to give the best user experience, they are making a big push to show only websites with high quality content. Therefore, sites that have problems with content quality are starting to see a drop in rankings as Google is updating its engines. Now would be a good time to look at the content on your website. Ask yourself if you have enough of it. Is it original or was it copied from another website? Is it well written or is it just a clutter of words thrown together into a paragraph?

JavaScript Navigation

Many sites use JavaScript to create their drop-down menus and other styles of navigation. It is very easy to use this type of navigation bar, however, for search engine crawlers it can look much different. The problem with JavaScript is that while there is a fully functional menu for website visitors, there are no links in the actual source code. Search engine crawlers rely on links in the code to navigate the website. Disable JavaScript in your web browser and then look at your website. If you can’t see the site navigation then crawlers won’t see it either.

Blockage of Search Engine Crawlers

The Robots.txt file is a file which contains instructions for search engine crawlers telling them where they can and can’t go on a specific website. Crawlers look for this file when they first hit the website. You can prevent crawlers from visiting certain pages or folders on your website by using the Robots Exclusion Protocol in the Robots.txt file. The error occurs when the webmaster accidently blocks the root folder of the website in this file and prevents the crawlers from crawling the entire website. If your Robots.txt file has a line which looks like Disallow: / then you are blocking your entire website.

Quality Website Design

This post is meant to give some insight into how VNACOLORS Web Designers build websites and what are some important factors to keep in mind if you plan on building a site on your own. Designing and building a website requires expertise and a commitment. Once you have made the decision to create a website for your business or for personal use, it is important to plan a few simple steps. For example, you need to ask yourself:

What is the goal of my website?
What is the target audience of my website?
What content do I want to offer?
Which key data and metrics will be use to determine the success of my site?

After answering these simple questions, VNACOLORS recommends considering the Blue print (layout) of your website. It is essential to determine where you want to place the main menu, what tabs you want to include, what the “Home” page is going to look like, etc. After the Blue print has been laid down, we recommend addressing issues such as color and contrast as these can be crucial in attracting visitors and making sure that they stay in your website. It is often helpful to test out the drafts of your website design and color scheme on as many users as possible. Creativity is the key, but there are certain pointers that cannot be ignored. Also, be careful when attaching pictures in your website. VNACOLROS strongly recommends paying attention to naming the files correctly in order to ensure that search engines recognize your files correctly. After completing the design process, you can now start the implementation. Use HTML elements in your content, write structured codes, validate everything, make sure pages are indexed correctly, consider load time and finally keep in mind accessibility.
At this point you should be able to launch your website and market it without feeling guilty. Your HTML should already be suitable for search engines and you should already have link strategies in place. Don’t get upset if your website doesn’t have great success from the very beginning, plan on a long-term basis. Don’t forget about Statistical Tools to measure the success of your website. If your existing statistics don’t determine these numbers, ensure that they do. There are some useful statistics tools such as GOOGLE Analytics and others. Use these metrics to evaluate the development and the success of your efforts. Finally maintain your website on regular basis. Update your website and look after it by adding new content and by blogging. Furthermore, check and proofread old content consistently.
We understand that many of these tips are easier said than done, but if you have questions regarding any of these pointers and would like some guidance, don’t hesitate to contact VNACOLORS.

E-Commerce Website Tips

E-Commerce 6 Comments

Buying online has become a big challenge for consumers nowadays. Aside from the vast variety of products available, there are many factors to consider such as the credibility of the selling website, product quality, shipping, etc. Often, consumers want to educate themselves prior to making the purchase, whether that be in-store or online. They want to learn what other shoppers think about a particular product, what other products are offered as a substitute, and where they can find the best deals, discounts, coupons and free samples. With this said, it is essential to include comment sections in ecommerce websites where previous customers can leave feedback. In addition, placing Special Deals, Coupons, Free Sample offers in eye catching places on the website will engage the consumers and more often than not, make them want to use these offers. Moreover, use your ecommerce website as a tool to educate your visitors about your products. Prior to making a purchase, a consumer wants to learn every possible information about the product that he or she is about to spend money on. The ultimate goal is to encourage the consumers to visit your site as a final destination before the make their purchase decision.
Security is another significant factor to consider when setting up an ecommerce website. It is essential to secure your website by implementing a deep state, full inspection firewall, as well as application level filters and firewalls that provide protection against web based attacks, such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting. To implement additional security on your ecommerce website, VNACOLORS recommends investing in SSL Certificates which can be obtained at www.vnacolorshost.com. These certificates not only add credibility to you ecommerce site, but they also ensure safe data & transaction processing.
Another very effective method to attract consumers and encourage them to become your customer is by asking for their opinion. You can ask them to share their opinion on things such as ice-cream flavor of the month if you are an ice-cream store or hottest place to vacation in 2010 if you are a travel agency. Bottom line is that people love to share their opinions and if they get the opportunity to do it online, they are more likely to return to your website and more importantly, use your services or purchase your products in the future. Hence, VNACOLORS recommends placing comment boxes in various places on your ecommerce website where visitors can easily express their opinions.
One of the things that every seller, manufacturer or service provider should be concerned about is competition. We are all afraid of competition: as a result, we are always ready to take different measures to stay on top. At the same time, consumers are interested in seeing what the competitors are charging for similar products or services that you offer because they want to get the best deal. Hence, playing smart is the key when it comes to establishing your ecommerce website. Be sure to include comparison pricing for the product that you are offering in order to prove that you are offering the best deal. Explain in a small paragraph why your product is the best on the market and what great things your existing customers have to say about it. If the product or service has won any awards or has been recognized for anything specific, be sure to mention that to add credibility to the product.
These are just a few tips to help you establish your ecommerce website as well as increase the traffic to the site and ultimately increase sales. It is up to you if you want to use these tips, but being proactive in today’s market is the only way to beat the competition and increase your bottom line.

SEO Misconceptions

Search Engine Optimization 9 Comments

SEO MisconceptionsAs many of you may have seen on the Services page of VNACOLORS, we offer a wide range of SEO services to our clients. Throughout our extensive experience in this field we have come across a number of misconceptions and unrealistic expectations that people have regarding online marketing. Practice shows that if a client‘s expectations are so high that it would be impossible to meet them, then they should never be taken on as a client. This is where it’s crucial to make sure that the client understands exactly what to expect from a SEO and how much time & money is reasonable to budget to get to where they want to be. To identify and hopefully clarify some of the unrealistic expectations regarding Search Engine Optimization, SEO Staff at VNACOLORS has identified several miscommunication bridges listed below. A lot of time, distrust, disappointment and ultimately money can be saved if these issues are addressed and resolved during the consultation phase.

Expectation 1: Increasing Rankings Fast
If the SEO is done correctly, the rankings will inevitably increase. However, the issue of when the rankings will increase is often a hot topic between clients and SEO Specialists. The truth is that the SEO specialist only has so much control over the time it will take for the rankings to increase because there are many factors at work here. For example, you can easily jump 10 positions if you are on page 15, but to jump this many position when you’re on the second page will take significantly longer time. It is important to understand that you can’t just spend a large sum of money on SEO in one month and then stop the service expecting to reach top rankings. Timing is a tough factor when it comes to increasing rankings, and this is something everyone should understand before they begin paying for SEO services.

Expectation 2: Website Traffic
One of the most popular questions that people like to ask during SEO consultations is, “How much traffic will my website generate?” This is indeed an important question, and different SEO specialists respond differently to this question. The reality, however, is that no matter how optimistic you and your SEO specialist are in your traffic projections, they rarely get met and hardly ever exceeded. The reasons for this can vary: there may be a listing that takes a larger than predicted share of click-through, the website is less than 100% relevant for the search term, searchers may not click off the result page, etc. It would be most beneficial if traffic expectations are not over-projected and taken one step at a time.

Expectation 3: Targeted Keywords
Clients often try to tackle all sorts of keywords on their keyword research list, but what they need to understand is that the volume of keywords only dilutes the amount of work done on each keyword. The simple thing to do here is to carve out a short but highly targeted keyword list and focus on getting these keywords to top rankings. Otherwise, what campaigns often end up with if their keyword lists are too long, is a 2nd or 3rd page raking which leads to unjustified marketing costs compared to the revenue generated.

Expectation 4: How Many Leads to Expect
To back up a little let’s go over the cycle that is SEO. We begin with increasing keyword rankings, which in turn results in higher traffic, which ideally generates leads, which results in high enough sales to justify all the money that was spent on the service in the first place. Theoretically all these steps sound reasonable, but often things go wrong and the revenue doesn’t cover the cost. In order to avoid any misconceptions in this field, people must understand that there are a number of steps involved in every SEO process and they need to modify their expectations about how soon they would start seeing the payoff. If the client doesn’t understand this simple concept, then the SEO specialist has failed to communicate it during the initial process.

Expectation 5: Your Impact on SEO Success
The dedication and involvement of the client in the SEO process is far more critical than some may imagine. What many clients don’t understand is that while they’re hiring a professional to run their online campaign, their part is still extremely crucial in the entire process. Clients can contribute to a successful SEO campaign by blogging, link building, social media and content creation. Once directed by the SEO specialist, clients should be willing to devote some time to ensure that their SEO campaign is successful. Instead of micromanaging the SEO specialist and calling them everytime the site traffic decreases, it would be much more beneficial if the client simply asked how they can help. On the other side, if clients are very passive and take forever to respond to updates and developmental requests of the SEO Specialist, then they’re only setting back the campaign.

After being in this business for many years, VNACOLORS Staff has come to the conclusion that relationship building with clients is key to success. We get to know our clients, build mutual trust and eventually guide them through the different stages of SEO.  No matter how hard it is to revise the expectations of your clients, always remember that it would be even harder to justify their disappointment if the campaign doesn’t live up to their expectations.
